The 1,200 square feet school building, made from bamboo, will be used to teach industrial arts to high school students.
The bamboo used for the school project features twice the compression strength of concrete and a greater strength-to-weight ratio than steel.
Bamboo is noted for its environmental benefits such as the ability to produce greater biomass and 30% more oxygen than a hardwood forest in the same area, along with being the most renewable building resource on earth, says David Sands, the architect who co-founded Bamboo Living.
Bamboo also grows at a rate three-and-a-half times faster than the fastest-growing trees in the world, which means bamboo is structurally mature in just three years.
Bamboo Living has supplied the design for the school building and all of the bamboo building materials.
The project is expected to receive more national attention as it will be featured on Renovation Nation, Discovery’s Planet Green Network show on June 5.
