The new house, designed by California-based Joseph Wong Design Associates and built by California-based general contractor Barnhart, resembles a college housing quad featuring plenty of open space, spacious bedrooms and a hotel-sized foyer and dining area.

The Ronald McDonald House opened its doors in June 2009, providing an essential resource for families with a child being treated at a local hospital. Barnhart-Heery served as construction manager on the $12.8 million project, which was constructed at the cost thanks to the donation of nearly $3 million in labor and materials by Barnhart and 40 subcontractors.

The three-story Ronald McDonald House also received awards for ‘Outstanding Project Management’ in the Small Project category, and the top honor in the Green Building category. The project uses 17.5% less energy than a typical similar-sized building in California. The facility offers hotel-sized spaces for families, play areas for siblings and even a beauty salon for mothers.

California Construction magazine is one of 11 monthly regional construction publications published by the McGraw-Hill Cos. throughout the country. The statewide competition annually recognizes construction and design excellence in Northern and Southern California. An independent jury of industry experts in design and construction judged more than 125 nominated projects in a variety of categories.

Barnhart-Heery is a wholly owned subsidiary of Heery International, a 1,500-person architecture, interior design, engineering, facility management, program management and construction management firm, based in Atlanta.
