Morganti completed the renovation under the ‘construction manager at risk’ format, a revolutionary process that virtually eliminates conflicts and change orders at the end of major projects.
The new terminal retained the design elements that reflected the airports character, and also incorporated the latest FAA required security features and controlling costs. Morganti was hired to oversee the 50,000 square feet addition to the existing airport, as the construction manager at risk for the KWIA terminal renovation project.
The estimated $25 million airport terminal features a user-friendly facility. Parking is available under the building, while the new structure features two floors. The loop road has been split, with one road leading to the departure area on the second floor, and the other old road leading to the pick-up area. Taxis and bus parking are also available along that road.
Passengers leaving the Keys will go to the upper level drop-off and enter the building, and the first thing they will see is the ticket counters. The luggage will go through a conveyer to the back, where it will be searched or scanned, and go over a skyway to the baggage loading area on the ground level.
The new terminal also hosts restaurants, restrooms and gift shops. A separate skyway is available down the escalator, stairs or elevator, to the holding area, which features 400 seats, restrooms and a snack bar. The baggage claim area has been expanded and pushed out about 20 feet. Rental cars, restrooms and office for lost luggage are located near the baggage claim area.
Each year, the Florida Department of Transportation recognizes superior achievement by presenting awards in honor of the Aviation Professional of the Year, Commercial Service of the Year, Community Airport of the Year, and Airport Project of the Year.
