As part of the refurbishment, innovative green energy lighting has been installed to replace the previous system, which was beyond repair. The new LED lights, incorporating colors for the first time, will save energy and is expected to last for decades. It will also cut the carbon footprint of the fountain lighting by an estimated 90%.
Equipped with eco-friendly LED lights, the fountain beneath Nelson’s Column will provide a dazzling display for the Games. As part of the renovation program, the Grade II-listed fountain has been lit up and the pumps of the fountain repaired. Three pumps which power the fountains will enable the plumes of water to cascade to a height of 35 feet. The new pumps will also enable the fountains to fire an 80 feet jet of water.
The first official performance of the fountain will be on the first week of June 2009, after which they will be lighted up every night in orange and lemon to mark the month-long Story of London festival.
