The Wembley police station has become the first of 42 buildings in the Greater London Authority Group to get a green makeover. The scheme intends to result in energy savings, and therefore financial savings also.
The police station will have energy-efficient installations following a detailed eco-audit by UK-based energy services company Dalkia. The facility will be equipped with solar panels, solar film fitted on windows to reflect sunshine and to control temperature, energy-efficient lighting, and a combined heat and power (CHP) system. CHP is a highly energy-efficient unit, which captures the heat created by energy generation for use locally.
The energy-efficient installations are expected to reduce the need for air conditioning. All the ageing boilers in the facility will be replaced. Voltage stabilization mechanisms will be installed to reduce incoming energy from the grid by 50%.
Wembley Police Station was built in 1972 and last refurbished in 2001.
