The renovation project, started in April 2009, incorporates new carpets, paint, gate counters, seating, a new ceiling, signage, and a fire sprinkler system.
Six months after the beginning of the project, Concourse A is nearly complete. The airport flaunts modern look with new flat-screen TVs, compact desks and monitors at the gate. Old desks are removed and the space is opened to permit airlines to use any gate at the airport. Concourse B will house new business center, new restrooms and a second elevator.
The new baggage screening area is also under construction. The TSA screeners and baggage scanners will be shifted behind ticket counters. Renovations to the baggage screening area and Concourse C are scheduled for completion by early 2010.
Besides the work inside the passenger terminal, the airport is planning a rental car terminal, new parking facilities, a new 5,000 feet runway, and a new GA apron.
The airport is publicly owned by the City of Des Moines. A long term plan calls for a new airport terminal, but its only scheduled to happen in next 25 years.
