The award acknowledges the most progressive and visionary residential project and celebrates innovation and recognizes excellence in Australian design. Carr’s Modular House for Intermode beat a field of over 100 entries nation wide and four finalists to succeed against much larger projects with significantly greater budgets.
Carr’s challenge was to create a simple, modern, modular housing design with the key benefits of a faster, more cost effective build, total flexibility in design and a strong environmental focus. The result is Carr’s modular concept for the design and construction firm Intermode.
The Modular House, constructed of galvanized steel columns and dark plywood panels, comprises two buildings, each arranged along a spine housing all services. The main building houses the living room, dining room, kitchen, study, storage and bedrooms, connected by glazed walkways.
A split-level timber decking is used to link this building to the guest pavilion. The pavilion houses a living and dining area, and two bedrooms. Large full-height windows, the over hanging roof and three meter wide external timber walkways frame views of the landscape.
In conjunction with Belle magazine, the Australian branch of the famous Danish jewellery and luxury goods company, Georg Jensen has sponsored the design award.
