The program was undertaken as part of the ‘Greening the Wharf’ project. The aim of the initiative is to deliver the majority of Sydney Theatre Company’s energy and water requirements from sustainable sources. Greening the Wharf is believed to be a first for any theater company in the world in its scale and comprehensive approach to sustainability.

One of the first components to be completed as part of this large-scale initiative was a complete upgrade of the public bathroom facilities, featuring some of the latest water-saving technologies from Caroma.

The replacement of inefficient toilets and urinals in the patron amenities is expected to reduce water consumption in the public bathrooms at Sydney Theatre Company by up to 40%.

The amenities now feature Caroma Cube 0.8L Urinal Suites, which operate at an ultra low 0.8 liters per flush. This innovative product was Australia’s first six- star Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS)-rated urinal and features an advanced flushing system designed to eliminate false activation and water wastage.

Sydney Theatre Company has also introduced Caroma Smartflush 4.5/3L toilet suites, which will reduce by half the amount of water used per flush compared to the 9 liter single flush units which were in place. Caroma Cube Smartflush toilets were selected for the theater and deliver the latest in styling and optimum water savings.

Caroma has worked with many businesses across Australia and around the world including the BHP Billiton Centre in Melbourne, the Natural Resources Defence Council of Santa Monica, and the famous Genzyme Centre in Boston, to assist in their efforts to reduce bathroom water consumption.
