The renovation plan includes planting trees and shrubs, refacing the storefronts with red and grey brick and improving traffic connection to the adjacent Target plaza. The new store is expected to provide more tax revenue for the town, according to Ross Moldoff, Salem’s planning director.
Three empty retail stores adjoining the supermarket will be demolished to make room for renovation. One open retail space will be available once reconstruction reaches completion.
Other plans in the renovation project also include tearing down the only other store in the plaza to make more room for parking and improving the entrances and exits.
James Lamp of J & Co, a consulting group working on the project said that DeMoulas is in dire need of a renovation. The store has been open since 1970 and needs to be up to date like other stores.
