Building work is now underway to extend the University’s main sports center based at its Clifton campus. The larger building will play host to a range of new facilities, including three new squash courts that will be made available to the local community and talented athletes, as well as the University’s own students and staff. The facilities on offer will work to accommodate the growth of mass participation in sport as well as elite and specialist athlete development.

Plans are also being made for a high performance suite, human performance laboratory, sports therapy suite and even an athlete training kitchen, intended to help elite athletes deal with their often complex and precise dietary requirements.

Announced by James Hayter, director of Sport at NTU, Sport England has allocated the money from its Sustainable Facilities fund, which will form a significant part of the University’s multi-million pound expansion and development of existing and new facilities.

Just seven projects across the country, from a total of 69 applications, were offered investment from Sport England’s GBP10 million ($16.5 million) Sustainable Facilities fund, with another four invited to further develop their bids.

The aim is to help secure a lasting sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games by supporting modern community sports facilities delivered through long-term partnerships between public, private and commercial organizations.
