The project incorporates construction of an international passenger terminal, apron, expansion and renovation of the existing terminal, construction of a duty-free area and a VIP lounge. The project seeks to increase passenger handling to 900,000 annually.

Originally opened in the 1960s Maputo airport was designed to handle 60,000 passengers per year. However it now serves over 600,000 travelers which has led to some problems in terms of security due to the overcrowding across both the arrival and departure areas.

Published media reports quoted Manuel Veterano, chief executive officer of ADM, as saying that, the project will be financed by a loan from China’s Exim Bank.

The project will begin in May 2009 and will be completed in 14 months to be ready for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
