The 8,000 square feet clinic resembles a medieval castle, and consists of 12 exam rooms, a procedure room, as well as labs, and a X-ray room.

The new clinic emulates the design of the Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is designed with eco-friendly features. The clinic is built using Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) standards, and uses green features such as water-efficient landscaping, recycled content, regional materials, high-efficiency fixtures, and low-emitting materials.

The castle design is integrated to generate an atmosphere conducive to healing for children. Featuring a family-centered design, the free-standing children’s hospital has fanciful artwork, with interiors and exteriors resembling a castle. Based on fictitious characters from the “The Legend of Sanford Castle”, the pediatric hospital has a distinct theme on each level of the unit.

Keeping kids in mind, the hospice features playrooms that have a castle with cut out windows, equipment plug-ins fixed into the floors, so kids who need medical equipment can leave their rooms, as well as computers with Internet, and various other items that cater to the emotional and social needs of kids. For the hospital-based school program, a teen room that can be used as a classroom has been added.

Sanford Children’s Clinic is the first Sanford World Clinic built as part of the initiatives outlined after a $400 million donation to Sanford Health from Denny Sanford in 2007.
