The project involves renovation of the airport’s two terminals in order to make them safer and more energy-efficient.

The terminals have received new ceilings, walls, floorings and a sprinkler system. The airport will receive a new elevator. All the rest rooms will be refurbished and energy-efficient light bulbs will be installed at the facility.

The terminal is expected to get two new gates with jet bridges and an expanded concessions area. Narrow walkways between holding areas will be renovated to expand the waiting area, along with further additions of between four and seven new jet bridges.

The renovation project has been financed by the airport’s passenger facility charge, which is a $4.50 fee attached to all tickets in and out of Des Moines.

The airport is publicly owned by the City of Des Moines.
