Designed by New York-based design firm, Cannon Design, the facility will include approximately 23,000 square feet of new construction. The oncology facility will be located on the hillside on the east side of the Ambulatory Care Center.

The design of the facility has integrated eco-friendly elements and as part of the overall green features, the new facility will be less visible than other structures on the Medical Center campus and will feature a grass roof.

Other green elements incorporated into the design are efficient heating and cooling systems, multiple skylights to provide natural light, and use of ‘green’ construction materials obtained from local sources.

Fletcher Allen is aiming to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the building.

Pizzagalli recently assisted the University of Vermont’s Student Residential Learning Complex at University Heights, achieve LEED-Gold. Additionally, Pizzagalli team members are American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE)-certified and are experienced in the renovation and construction of hospitals and health care facilities.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by early 2010.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is both a community hospital and, in partnership with the University of Vermont, the state’s academic medical center.
