Since 2001, Kimball Office has won nine Good Design awards in seating, office systems and tables. Hero and Fit, unveiled in June 2009, is the result of a partnership between Kimball Office and German furniture maker Interstuhl.

‘Fit’ is a simple-designed seating consisting of ‘intelligent mesh’ stretched over a cantilevered steel frame. The chair automatically conforms to even the slightest movement. The woven mesh fabric produces firmer and softer seating zones.

‘Hero. Just for You’ is a heavy, light, tall, short seating furniture. It uses multiple technologies to provide a personalized sit for individuals of all sizes and statures. The auto-fit tilt mechanism senses the user’s weight and automatically tensions the seat and backrest, while an integrated fine adjustment allows preferred resistance levels to be calibrated.

Now in its 59th year, the museum’s historic Good Design program was founded in Chicago in 1950 and remains as the oldest and the world’s most recognized program for design excellence. In 2009, a record number of submissions were received by the Athenaeum ranging from a Mars Landing Rover designed for a 2030 NASA Mars Space Mission to a simple water purification system for rural South African villages.
