The expansion includes construction of Boston Children’s North, a 46,000 square feet satellite facility, which would house specialists doctors. The new medical center would be replacing 6,500 square feet office that Children’s has been operating at Lahey Clinic in Peabody.
The medical facility would have 8,000 square feet of new construction, while the rest of the work would involve the renovation of a former fitness center. Plans also include the expansion to include operating rooms for day surgeries, which would be done within five years.
The Children’s Hospital at Lahey averages about 12,000 patient visits a year, but with the new facility, the number would rise to 30,000. A permanent office would also be provided for the specialists at Boston Children’s North.
Departments such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology and sports medicine would also be receiving am expansion with the creation of the new space. Services such as audiology, nutrition, phlebotomy, speech pathology, diagnostic X-ray, MRI and ultrasound would also find a place for themselves.
Children’s Hospital purchased the 25-acre centennial property for $46.5 million late in 2008 which included 1,100 parking spaces and more than 250,000 square feet that the hospital is currently leasing to an assortment of businesses. About 70,000 square feet of vacant space is available for additional tenants.
