The GBP6.5 million ($9.7 million approx) new mental care unit, which will replace the existing Highfield Unit, has already received planning approval. The new unit will be designed to provide better working conditions for staff and facilities for 11-18 year old.
gbs will design the new addition in such a way that it will blend well with the adjacent Grade II-listed buildings. A palette of natural and inspiring materials has been used externally. This includes color coordinated render, rainwater goods and window frames, buff brick and timber cladding. The cruciform provides visibility for staff, and prevents hazardous blind spots. A series of sky-facing windows and lounges are integrated to provide natural light into the interiors.
gbs architects has incorporated a double loaded corridor, which is an innovative system to combat some of the daily pressures of managing the unit. The system enables ‘swing bedrooms’. Two rooms at the end of the bedroom wing feature a double corridor system. This allows either or both to be separated from those rooms occupied by the opposite sex, while simultaneously being connected to the same sex wing.
The facility features spacious bedrooms ensuring greater privacy. The unit has a self-contained ICU suite, including a safe room, centrally located adjacent to the staff base. Supporting facilities featured at the unit are family rooms, games rooms, quiet spaces, lounges and facilities for day patients.
A large teaching area surrounded by art, gym and music rooms is housed in the first floor. This provides a dedicated location for the kids to go to school, mimicking the normal separation between home and school life.
Construction of the unit will commence in August 2010 and is expected to be completed by August 2011.
