A new terminal building would also be constructed for operating international flights, with the old terminal dedicated for low-cost airlines. The Xiamen Gaoqi, which at present features 53 gate positions, would see the addition of another 80 gates as part of the expansion.
Wang Yan, deputy general manager of Xiamen International Airport Group said that the airport also plans to build another runway that would be large enough to accommodate Airbus A380.
Sources report that a new airport will be constructed on Dadeng Island, which will cover an area of 46 square kilometers.
The proposed airport’s construction at the Xiang’an District of Xiamen is expected to complete by 2018, and fully operational in 2019.
