This funding will allow the Society to purchase specialized audio, lighting, and hearing assistance equipment as part of a technical upgrade to modernize the ArtSpring Theatre. These upgrades will meet the needs of today’s artists performing at the theater, while improving its technical capacity to present artistic and cultural performances.
The Island Arts Society, established in 1989, operates and maintains the ArtSpring Theatre. The theater houses more than 250 seats and has come to play a prominent role in the cultural landscape of Salt Spring Island. With the purchase of new equipment, the theater will improve its sound capability and the quality of lighting for future productions.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $8,790 through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program seeks to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and arts presentation or exhibition. It is also designed to increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts and to museum collections and heritage displays.
The Government of Canada is investing $540 million in the arts and culture sector to stimulate the economy as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. It also recently renewed funding for federal arts programs totaling $1.51 billion over the next five years.
