The $554,000 contract, approved by the Mobile County Council, involves renovation of the 25,000 square feet downtown office building’s first floor for the Municipal Court services.

This renovation project would add new space to the facility where the Mobile municipal court workers can conduct drug tests and probation services in overflow rooms and in the back hallways.

Most of renovations would be taking place on the first floor of the building. During this period, simultaneous demolitions would also be carried out at the restrooms on the other floors, the contract reportedly stated.

Al Stokes, the mayor’s chief of staff, stated that further renovation on any of the three floors would cost additional expenditures, adding that the city has already invested more than $1.5 million. About $949,000 were paid by the city in 2008, which has still not been put to use.

The renovations are slated to reach completion within seven months, stated John Crawford, director of the city’s architectural engineering department.
