Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC), the Chinese contractor of the project said that the work on the first phase of expansion and modernization is in progress.

The first phase of the expansion project includes construction of a new control tower, a VIP pavilion, and separate domestic and international passenger terminals, modernization of road accesses and refurbishment and expansion of the cargo terminal. The cargo terminal is ready and is in use since January 2009.

The international passenger terminal is nearing completion while the sanitary ware works are left along with the furniture for the rooms in the presidential VIP lounge. The construction work will start on the new domestic passenger terminal with the demolition of the existing domestic terminal.

Initial investment in the project was estimated at $75 million, but in December 2009 the company said it needed a further $50 million to finish the work.

Once completed, Maputo International Airport will have a capacity to process 900,000 passengers per year and 1,300 travellers per hour at peak times.
