The Suvarnabhumi Airport has an area of 8,000 acres and at present has the capacity to support 76 flights per hour and three million tons of cargo per year.

The $2.2 billion investment was to cater to the needs of 80 million passengers. The AOT now favors a much lower investment of $1.9 billion in order to increase its annual passenger handling capacity. The said amount would handle 60 million passengers from its existing annual 45 million capacity.

$1.9 billion is slated to be consumed between 2011 and 2016 and would be used in an expansion project of the existing terminal building. All the domestic and international passengers are at present using the existing Suvarnabhumi terminal, which spreads over a total area of 563,000 square meters.

The airport’s passenger building consists of seven floors and two basements. The airport features seven four-story concourse buildings: concourse building A serves domestic passengers, concourse building B serves international passengers, concourse Buildings C, D, E, F and G serve international passengers.

The amount quoted by the AOT would have seen the construction of a domestic terminal and a third runway. At present the airport has two runways in the first phase, the east runway is 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide and the west runway is 3,700 meters long and 60 meters wide.
