Nicola LogWorks, a Canadian firm specializing in hand-crafted log homes and timber frame structures, has used pine beetle logs to build the ceiling of the university’s native-themed assembly hall. With this project, the wood builder is aiming to turn the attention of the regions’ commercial and institutional construction industry toward the aesthetics, viability and economics of using wood.

A green ‘living wall’ is a key architectural feature of the House of Learning, which will help in air treatment. The House of Learning will incorporate the new library, the learning commons and space for Aboriginal programs and services.

The 25m-wide assembly hall, designed to resemble a pit house features log ceiling made of clear-span timber. Nicola LogWorks has also made use of pine logs killed by mountain pine beetle. The structural integrity of the logs is ensured by eliminating the fungus in the wood.

Construction of the two signature buildings is scheduled to be completed by early 2011.

Nicola LogWorks builds custom hand-crafted log homes and timber frame structures, and is a multi-discipline log home building company.
