The new temporary rooftop pavilion is 35m above ground level on top of the Westfield Stratford City, adjacent to the Olympic Park. The structure encases the new Studio East Dining spanning 800 square meters, run by temporary restaurant expert Bistrotheque. The pavilion captures panoramic views of Olympic site and London skyline.

The 70-ton building has been dubbed as ‘Rolls Royce of pop-ups’. It has been constructed using materials borrowed from the Westfield construction site. It includes 2,000 scaffolding boards, 3,500 scaffolding poles, and reclaimed timber. Clad in a translucent membrane made using industrial grade heat retractable and 100% recycled polyethylene, the building glows when illuminated at night.

The roof of the pavilion structure is designed to be seen from all directions. It resembles a series of flying roofs, tilting towards key views forming a playful roofscape. The spaces beneath this roof consist of a number of interlocking ceilings creating a radiating series of spaces, from the central dining area with its grand piano to each of the external views.

The structure will only exist for three weeks before being dismantled, and all the materials will be reused on the Westfield site after the dining room finishes its run on July 4, 2010.

The pavilion’s character has been generated from Bistrotheque’s concept for a unique dining experience as well as the spectacular location of the Olympic site over the edge of a parapet.
