The new £5 million ($7.9 million) sharp-edged entranceway for City of Bath College is expected to gain planning permission by Christmas, and be ready by September 2011.
Stride Treglown Tektus has proposed a clean-cut form for the new entranceway. The three-storey facility has been designed to include a bespoke reception area, new hair and beauty salons, a dedicated higher education centre and a college shop. The complex has been conceived in such a way as to bring together all student services under one roof. Only the first and second floors will provide access to the neighbouring Macaulay Building.
The existing Kings Building on James Street West and Avon Street will be demolished to make way for the new state-of-the-art gateway. This is quite different from the college’s extensive £68 million ($107 million) redevelopment plan put forward two years ago which proposed a complete redesign, saving only the recently constructed Music and Performing Arts facility by Aaron Evans Architects. This proposal could not move forward as it was denied funding from the Governments Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
