Designed by G.E. Wattier, the 93-room hotel occupies seven floors of the 1923-built Liberty Building at 418 Sixth Ave., which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Architectural elements of the old building have been incorporated into the hotel’s design with all rooms featuring high ceilings and big windows.
Guest rooms are located on floors four through eight of the 12-storey building. An indoor pool, the Hyatt’s StayFit fitness center and three meeting rooms are in the lower level. The hotel offers 1,125 square feet of flexible, high-tech meeting/function space. All the 93 rooms feature a 42-inch HDTV, plush Hyatt Grand Bed and an eight feet sectional sofa sleeper. Complimentary Wi-Fi access is enabled throughout the hotel.
The hotel also features a 24/7 Guest Kitchen serving made-to-order snacks and entrees, and Intimate Bakery Café featuring Starbucks specialty coffees, premium beers and wines and cocktails.
Sizes of all the rooms of the hotel range from 750 to 1,000 square feet, comparatively larger than the standard room sizes for Hyatt Place hotels. The rest of the building is occupied by residential and office condominiums that have access to elevators separate from those designated for hotel guests.
Hyatt Place Des Moines/Downtown is located in the heart of Des Moines and is minutes away from various major city attractions. The developer of the project was Jake Christensen. The hotel is owned by the franchisee, Liberty Building Development Group LLC. Partners in the group are Christensen, Mike Nelson, B.J. Baker and Dick Ten Braak. The hotel was unveiled on 27 December 2010.
