The contest is aimed at transforming the Sandpoint airport’s image of a rural airstrip to one that is more symbolic of the affluent clientele that now uses the facility on a regular basis.
The design criteria for the competition will include incorporating a Northwest theme for a main gate that will cover the existing current fence and greet visitors arriving from either the runway or along Airport Way. The criteria also states that all signs, monuments and landscaping must be illuminated by photocells, and trees and plants at the entryway should be drought-resistant and deer-proof.
A selection committee will choose 10 final designs for the project, with those entries to be displayed at the airport for a period of two weeks. During this period, the committee will make its final recommendation for the winning design.
Funding for the project will come from a portion of the money left out from an initial $35,000 raised by more than 20 businesses and individuals in support of airport improvements several years ago.
