The brief required the design to be inspirational as well as reflective of the association’s core philosophy that quality living environments also enhance the social environment.

The carpet design draws inspiration from a mix of sources such as aerial photographs of cities to microscopic images of blood cells. All the designs are cut in pieces, blended and mixed back together and woven into Axminster rugs by European carpet manufacturer Desso.

The finished design, complementing the rest of the interior space, was also aimed at improving acoustics while allowing for easy under-floor access.

Similar to Broekman’s other works, the design of the carpet are inspired by a fascination for chance experiences, and the things that impose their presence on us, but elude us when we try to recall them later.

Though the colourful, dynamic forms and images used in the design are fairly simple when viewed in isolation, they are combined into complex compositions by interweaving colour, movement, rhythm and depth. In each of her works, Barbara creates an area of tension between the various details and their unifying geometric context.
