The 24,300 square feet facility has been designed by Toledo, Ohio-based Collaborative Incorporation. It comprises 10-lane swimming pool measuring 25-yard-by-25-metres, a diving well with a depth of 13 feet, and one metre and three metre diving boards.
The centre imbibes several green features such as a 90-well geothermal energy system which acts as a healing and cooling element as well as a heat-recovery system, capturing surplus heat from ventilation air and using it to heat the pool water. It is also equipped with a reflective roof possessing clay tiles.
About 90% of the building’s interior allows optimum penetration of natural light while offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Installation of low-flow and waterless fixtures reduces water wastage. The centre’s landscaping and irrigation systems add to its sustainability by reducing water consumption.
The building features an on-site retention pond which gathers rain water to meet irrigation needs. It is also adorned with native plants positioned in such a way so as to decrease irrigation requirements. Other eco-friendly features of the centre include use of reclaimed, low VOC materials procured through local sources during the construction process, and creation of outdoor bicycle racks and a new pedestrian walkway to boost the green initiative.
