The project will be executed in phases. The first phase includes extension of the passenger terminal building, central utility facility, as well as related work. Phase II involves renovation of the Department of Civil Aviation’s building, along with upgrades to the airside and landside activities.
There will be creation of a new check-in counter area following the revamp while the present counter will be transformed into a VIP Room and commercial zone. The expansion work will also include increasing the number of check-in counters from eight to 18, immigration counters from six to 14, as well as baggage handling systems from one to two. A total of four additional bridges will be created post facelift. Further, there will be a rise in the number of parking bays which will enhance its capacity from 300 to 500.
Another significant feature of the project includes the expansion of the terminal building which will increase its span from 8040 square metres to more than 15,000 square metres. The expanded terminal will also enhance its passenger handling capacity from 330 to 900 passengers.
The project has received MYR150 million ($48.17 million) from the Transport Ministry as part of the Second Economic Stimulus Package. Work is expected to be completed by September 2012.
