The project will be carried out in two phases. Work involves creation of a ticket lobby, single security checkpoint in the first level and new retail units, along with facelift of the baggage claim space.

The first phase will include creation of a ticket lobby sporting a Lake Tahoe theme, and upgrades to the new baggage claim zone. The construction of the baggage claim area will further be segregated into four phases. The overhauled space will incorporate extensive signage to facilitate the travellers. The area will also substitute its carpet with tiles featuring Truckee River images. The columns in the area will be adorned with rock features following the facelift while the ceiling in shiny chrome finish will be muted to match up with the Lake Tahoe theme of the ticket lobby. This phase is expected to be finished by April 2012.

Phase II of the project is expected to commence in early 2012. It will involve creation of an advanced security checkpoint replacing the existing food court in the first floor. The roof will be elevated while the facility will be extended 40 feet into the ramp for accommodating an atrium in the second storey. The second floor will also accommodate a new dining and retail space as part of the phase. Further, there will be a new food court spanning 18,000 square feet. The food court will be equipped with ceilings measuring 18 feet and windows offering views of the tarmac.

The project will be financed through federal and private funds, as well as airport revenues. Construction is slated to be completed by early 2013.
