The company has installed the roof at the college’s sports centre as a part of a renovation project. The renovated sports centre has a new fitness suite featuring an undulating roof, made using Kerto engineered timber. The roof has a gentle curve, which softens the rectilinear sports hall behind it, and provided a generous covered entrance area.
The Metsä Wood Kerto has been developed by Metsä Wood, a UK-based supplier of wood-based products, systems and services. The product is a laminated veneer lumber (LVL), as stated by The Construction Index.
Kerto has superior strength to weight ratio and adds a beauty quotient to the building. It has a long life, which was required for the relatively small cross sectional area. Additionally, it offered faster installation.
Aditionally, Kerto has homogenous bond structure and is strong and dimensionally stable, which prevents it from wrapping and twisting. The wood for Kerto manufacturing is sourced from Metsä Wood’s certified forests and it has full PEFC accreditation.
Upon completion of the renovation and expansion, the sports centre has an area of 1950 square metres. The scheme has been designed by Rivington Street Studio.
The new building serves as an entrance and offers a link to the University College’s existing games hall and original 1960’s sports block, making it a single sports centre. The project has also refurbished the existing hall and sports block.
