The project involved construction of a new student study space as a part of Morgan Library expansion. The architect was challenged to create a sleek, all glass cube, which in addition to offering a comfortable, quiet study space for the students, also have to be sustainable to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification.
Studiotrope has created the study space using dynamic SageGlass from SAGE, to beat the sunlight from the western realms of the Morgan Library. SageGlass is an electronically controlled glazing that changes tint on demand in response to changing daylight conditions, so that the glass automatically darkens or clears as needed.
The company has installed the SageGlass in the entire two-storey western curtain wall of the building, which measures 24 feet by 45 feet. The glass wall has several operable windows and an egress door. The glass on the upper and lower floors is zoned and can be controlled separately and activated by exterior light sensor, as well as manually for events, movies and other activities.
The extension of the library includes a commons area that consist of a digital production studio for students and faculty.
