The installation which was commissioned by Unibail Rodamco, the owner of Stadshart shopping centre and the municipality of Zoetermeer, is being seen as a step towards turning the shopping centre into a sustainable precinct.

Sempergreen Vertical Systems installed 274 square metre living wall comprising 686 pre-cultivated flexipanels. The living wall is designed to meet two essential criteria, namely sustainability and water-saving. It is a fully internet-driven irrigation system to nourish the wall. The system measures moisture, temperature and EC content and adjusts the amount of water accordingly. The water that seeps off the wall is collected in a 1000 litre container and recycled to feed the plants.

The living wall is based on hardy plants suitable for both sunny and shady spots. The wall is designed to stay green throughout the year. By using a variety of shrubs and perennials, the wall displays changing colours throughout the seasons.
