Designed by RHWL architects, the new 5,250 square metre performance theatre is a project which is being jointly developed by the Doncaster Council and Muse Developments. The new theatre will include a 620-seat lyric theatre auditorium, with a large stage and fly-tower and a flat floor flexible second space that can accommodate 400 guests in standing position or 200 in seating.

The new theatre will also include a dance studio for practice and performance, an intimate drama studio, educational areas which can double up as meeting rooms and a large open foyer that includes a bar and cafe. The theatre will have a simple and strong design, and will open onto the New Square. It will feature a glass facade.

The new development forms an essential part of the town’s ongoing £300 million ($474.9 million) civic and cultural quarter (CCQ) project. The entire CCQ project is being part funded by the European Union, under the scope of its European Regional Development Fund’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme. The scheme has also received £2.1 million ($3.27 million) of National Lottery investment from the Arts Council England.

Construction on the scheme is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2013.
