The plaza will be a 55,000 square feet development, which is likely to be the vibrant social centrepiece of the entire scheme. The plaza will offer extremely flexible space, which will boast capabilities to host large annual events to small get-together of the locals.
The plaza will have two buildings on its either side. The Westbrook on the west and The Commerce on the east. The northern side of the plaza will open onto the 3rd Street and will be framed by the historic Jett Building and a new multi-purpose pavilion. While the southern side will open onto an an acre of wooden area, approachable by a double allée of trees.
Centre to the plaza is a multi-purpose stage, which will be located on the western side of the building, overlooking The Westbrook. The stage will be a two-tiered platform that will be 18 feet wide and 20 feet deep on top with a lower tier allowing larger musical ensembles to perform.
The stage will be flexible and can be expanded by means of movable platforms for large concerts and can be adapted for a large movie screen with Permanent stage lighting and audiovisual equipment.
The eastern side of the plaza will feature four giant operable umbrellas that will cover more than 6,400 square feet of space and create a sculptural gateway to the plaza. The umbrellas will provide shade in the day and at night, LED lights will be used to transform it into a striking scene of colours and patterns. These architectural elements will be manufactured in Germany and will debut in the US through its installation at Sundance Square.
The 2,000 square feet, multi-purpose pavilion will enclose the plaza to the north. The plaza and the pavilion will be separated by means of movable glass doors. The pavilion will have a water feature where waves will flow towards the centre of the cascade from either end to create thick white-water moving waterfalls across the field of the cascades.
