The renovation was aimed at improving the building fabric of the museum. Designed by the Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz, the renovation has improved the facades and interior of the buildings, which has made the building fit to house priceless collections. The project also addressed the access issues of the building.

The team has upgraded the mechanical and electrical systems, as well as restored and improved the thermal performance of the building envelope. Arup has contributed towards the lighting design and fire engineering of the building.

The consortium has improved the access to the buildings and has worked towards stabilizing indoor climate to keep the art in top condition. The consortium has also added new support buildings and a new basement to the museum.

The work on the museum is complete and has been handed over to the authorities. The renovated building will once again showcase its collections of the Dutch nation’s treasures from the Golden Age. The Rijksmuseum is scheduled to re-open in the first quarter of 2013.

Arup has also secured a contract to refurbish the Philips Wing of the museum and bring it in-line with the standards of the other buildings of the museum.
