The expansion will increase NMC’s operating room capacity from a total of 12 rooms to 16 rooms, all outfitted as minimally invasive OR suites. Operating rooms will be an average of 550 square feet with the existing suites averaging 400 square feet. Larger rooms will allow greater access for the da Vinci Robot for minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The expansion will accommodate a new integrated hybrid suite, designed specifically for advanced cardiac and vascular surgical procedures. It combines a traditional OR with the advanced imaging systems of a cardiac catheterization lab, affording NMC patients with the best of both areas of expertise. The hybrid suite will also be an ideal environment for single-graft robotic surgery using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.

NMC will also renovate one of its Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) labs for those patients who do not need hybrid suite care. NMC’s new Cath Lab will be outfitted with the latest, state-of-the art equipment, including new 3D cardiac mapping, electrophysiology (EP), x-ray and monitoring equipment, while minimising radiation exposure. The equipment will allow cardiologists to view images of the coronary arteries at a higher resolution, resulting in faster diagnosis and the ability to begin life-saving treatments.

The new surgical wing will be extended from the current building out onto the existing surgery parking area. The expansion will also allow for future vertical growth of the hospital.

The project is set to break ground this winter and will be completed in a series of phases. It is scheduled for completion within 18-20 months of the beginning of construction.
