The Beacon High School will be located at 521 West 43rd Street, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Scope of the project involves development of a seven-storey school, which will have a capacity to accommodate about 2,900 students.
The school will accommodate 50 new classrooms and a 432-seat auditorium. The building will include new technology labs, music rooms, wireless internet access, a black box theatre and a 7,500 square foot gymnasium. The theatre and the gymnasium will be housed with the new two-storey addition to the old structure.
Scope of work involves extensive demolition of the existing structure as well as the installation of a sub-slab depressurisation system. Skanska USA, a division of the Swedish Skanska AB, has broken ground on the project and plans to complete it in May 2015. The value of the contract is $88 million.
