Touted as the new cultural centerpiece of Salt Lake City, the 2,500-seat centre will be designed to attract traveling Broadway musicals and other big shows and complement the city’s new retail and finance centre at City Creek Center.

The new performing arts centre will blend form with function. Input from user groups and the public would be incorporated into the design of the facility, for which several open houses will be scheduled. The design will also take into account the fact that the Utah Performing Arts Center will work on a daily basis.

According to the city, the blueprints are not expected to be finalised until 2014, when construction is expected to begin. The grand opening of the centre is slated for March 2016.

Layton Construction won the contractor bid on the $110 million project. The county will invest $28.2 million and will operate the facility.
