Developed through Public Private Partnership framework between Balfour Beatty and NHS Fife, the new wing offers a host of services which include maternity, paediatric, renal and critical care. The facility houses 11 operating theatres, a new A+E department and has a capacity of 500-beds.
The design of the new hospital resonates the architectural highlights of the site. The building has a stepped form, which tries to strike a balance between the urban scale of the existing hospital building in its north-west and the suburban scale of the adjoining residential area in its north-east. The design also mimics the medium rise modern variant of the podium and tower format of the existing building.
The two-storey podium accommodates diagnostic and treatment space and includes buffer spaces, which can be used for future changes in clinical practice and technology. The podium is broken by wide landscaped courtyards, which gives specific orientation to the space and allows it to reap the benefits of natural light and long views.
The floor level above the podium features wards that have been accommodated in straight or wave form elements. This arrangement of the ward has created wards of different sizes to suit variety of purposes of NHS Fife.
