Sprawling over a 15,275 square meter plot of land near Shatt Al-Basra, the culture centre will form a part of Basra’s new administrative complex.

Incorporating sustainability, durability, security, and functionality elements in its design, the new culture centre will accommodate the new Basra Governorate headquarters offices and will host different cultural events and festivals.

It will also include fine arts exhibitions areas, meeting rooms, conference halls, heritage museums, cinema halls, a theatre, radio and television broadcasting department, a public library, cafeteria and large areas with greenery.

Modern and contemporary, the new cultural centre will be designed according to the heritage, and cultural and visual legacy of Basra. The facade of the centre will feature randomly-placed diagonal square shaped openings that resemble dots in Arabic Calligraphy. These openings create an illusion of reducing in size gradually as one approaches closer to the main entrance void, forming a focal point of the design.

The curvilinear gradual architectural elements of the facade also resembles an open book with ornamental features, which adds elegance and beauty to the centre. Featuring sequential ramps, the central void is linked on different levels, which connects the two parts of the building.
