The new public blood bank will be located at 4900 Broad Road in Onondaga near Syracuse, on the site of former Community General Hospital. The blood bank will be a two-storey building, which will have a total area in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 square feet.
The blood bank is being constructed to collect, process and store umbilical cord blood donated by families throughout Central and northern New York, which would be used by those in need of medical treatments for diseases like cancer and sickle-cell anaemia and for medical research around the world.
Construction on the scheme will be undertaken by US-based construction contractor Pike Company. Construction of the blood bank is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2014. The entire project, which includes construction cost as well as equipment cost, is being met by means of state grant.
