Design by Broadway Malyan, the Chatham Place scheme is being developed by a partnership between Muse and Reading Borough Council. The phase II of the scheme will be located in the Reading Urban Area and separated from the town centre by the IDR.
Sprawling over a 0.4 hectare site, the phase II involves construction of two towers of 19 and nine storeys, which will accommodate ground floor retail, residential units, private amenity space and underground car park. The phase II units will be mix of one, two and three bedroom units. Almost 25% of the units will be lifetime homes, while 5% will be wheelchair units.
The project also involves development of a public urban garden and improvements to highways, pedestrian linkages and landscaping of the Chatham Street roundabout. Construction on phase II is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2013.
The scheme will be developed to the high quality sustainable standards, which will minimise energy consumption and achieve a minimum of carbon reduction target of 12.5% over Part L. The scheme is being aspired for a CSH rating of 3 as minimum and 4 as an objective. Work is expected to begin in spring 2013.
The first phase of the Chatham Place development was completed in 2009. This included a multi-storey public car park, 96 affordable homes, 211 private apartments, substantial public open spaces and 10,000 square feet of retail/ leisure space.
