The facility will span 150,000 square feet approximately and will feature six international arrival gates, among which three are new and other three are converted from terminal 5, and two additional baggage claim belts. A US Custom, Border Protection and Federal Inspection Service facility will also be featured which can accommodate 1200 passengers in one hour. This facility will help deliver a smooth travel experience for passengers.
Genlser has designed the facility in a thoughtful manner, incorporating the previous existing terminal 5’s look and feel, which is bright and friendly. The design also resonates with JetBlue’s brand aesthetic. The International Arrival halls will feature glass wall that will enable infiltration of natural light in the hall. Circulation paths in the new facility have been redesigned, which will help passengers move through gates and customs. This will minimise the walking and travel time.
The new facility also features various sustainable elements such as natural daylight in places like Immigration Hall and in the corridor connecting the aircraft to the hall; recycled and reused stuff from the concrete reclaimed from the aircraft apron used as the base of the concrete within the building; low VOC materials inside the terminal; efficient HVAC system for optimisation of performance; low flow water fixtures; and special focus on indoor air quality and health and wellness. The facility is set to open in early 2015.
