The new annexure is a single-storey, 36-bed unit that consists of two wards of 18-beds. The beds in the two wards can be flexibly reconfigured to provide different combinations of bed numbers on each ward. All the patient rooms are complete with ensuite facilities.
The new building is surrounded by landscaped, secure gardens. It has been designed in a way to allow maximum permeation of natural light.
The annexure has an open, airy space feel. Inside, the new facility has been adorned with a variety of artwork, based on the theme of nature. The new building blends and complements the existing ecology on the hospital site.
The scheme was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The facility will serve patients in east Kent and will be run by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust. The construction of the building entailed a capital outlay of £10 million ($16.05 million).
