The redevelopment is aimed at moving more council staff into the building, enabling the council to dispose of other buildings, and save over £1 million ($1.58 million) over the next two years.
The redevelopment includes the creation of large open-plan office spaces to accommodate double the number of staff; upgrades to the infrastructure to improve the working environment; and creation of extra space and better facilities in the town hall, which will reduce the need to use separate office buildings. In addition to that, the redevelopment also aims at improving a range of services that will be offered at the One Stop Shop.
Supporting and investing in the local community, 70% of the materials and workforce required to deliver the project, will be procured locally.
The council and ISG will also work with conservation experts to ensure that proposed plans are in keeping with the historical significance of the building. The redevelopment work on the building is scheduled to start in early 2013.
