The improvements as per the new masterplan includes acquisition of approximately 378 acres of land and relocation of the runway to the west, extending it to 6,001 feet. This will convert the current runway into a new taxiway.

The plan also advocates relocation of the automated weather observation station (AWOS); upgrading the airfield markings and lighting; establishment of a global positioning-based instrument approach; and improving both the terminal area and hangar storage space.

The city of Monett might buy land from 11 property owners and acquire three easements. The future runway will adhere to Airport Reference Code (ARC) C-II planning criteria and accommodate 100% of the general aviation aircraft fleet weighing 12,500 to 60,000 pounds at 60% useful load on takeoff.

The project has received approximately $150,000 a year from Non-Primary Entitlement (NPE) funds for airport improvement. This amount will be used for this particular project.
