Originally built in the 1970s, the student residential building comprises 521 student study bedrooms arranged in 75, two- and three-storied shared ‘house’ style dwellings, which will be transformed totally by the refurbishment scheme.

The refurbishment work involves the complete strip out of each dwelling including the safe removal of asbestos before structural alterations, roof and window replacements are undertaken. Designed by Lewis & Hickey architects, the new Energy Performance ‘A’ rated residences will be more energy-efficient than the original buildings.

Under the refurbishment project, the residential scheme will feature contemporary furniture, kitchen and bathroom packages. The campus will also be provided with new security accessed WiFi throughout, a refurbished games room, an extended and refurbished ‘Egg’ common room building and a new laundry facility.

To complement the campus’s refurbished residences stock, the scheme will also employ extensive hard and soft landscaping. The 42-week project will be handed back to the university in phases and will be completed in September 2013.
