Located on the northeast side of University Hospital, the eight-storied Patient Care Tower also houses Ellis Fischel Cancer Center’s $50 million new home.
Established on 310,500 square feet of space, the Patient Care Tower includes 90 private patient rooms, six operating rooms with space for six more to be built in the future. It also features a 7,000 square feet in-patient pharmacy, 35 pre-procedure rooms and 18 post-procedure rooms, as well as the Ellis Fischel Gala and the Brown Family Healing Garden.
Additionally, it also features the intensive care unit rooms, which include iAware, developed by Cerner and the Tiger Institute at MU Health Care, which shows a patient’s vital signs for the past 30 hours.
Designed to provide up to date medical facilities to the cancer patients, the new Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, which is also located in the Patient Care Tower, features an ambulatory infusion unit for chemotherapy treatment, a radiation oncology unit with two linear accelerators for radiation therapy treatment, medical imaging with CT and PET scanners, as well as a DEXA bone-density scanner, 66 exam rooms, central Missouri’s only American College of Surgeons-accredited breast health center with 3-D and digital mammography, an outpatient pharmacy and a cancer rehabilitation gym.
Apart from that a gift shop and boutique featuring items unique for cancer patients, such as wigs and breast prostheses, are also included in the facility.
The facility was built as a green or sustainable building and has 596 window panels which enable infiltration of natural light. The building uses recycled construction materials and features three green roofs that are covered by plants to reduce rainwater runoff and to provide natural insulation.
The new Patient Care Tower opened its doors to the patients on 18 March 2013.
